Bryan had heard that there were ghost Pokémon causing some problems on MT. pyre again recently. He had decided he could use the extra cash in his pocket, he was going to need to stock up on supplies relatively soon so now was the best time to do these odd jobs.[break][break]

However, what he should be investing in aside from supplies was a baby sitter because his morepeko was once again being a fucking nuisance in his hoodie, digging for berries. "I told you not to fucking eat them all so fast, now you ran out." he chastised him as Morpeko began to get hangry. "We'll find some nearby, hold the fuck on-" he said as morpeko began to throw a hissy fit in his hoodie and made him lose his balance and he slid off the path. [break][break]

"Shit shit shit!" he said quickly making his way to a lower level of mt pyre that had trees to break his fall.

Luka has been frequenting Mt. Pyre almost every day as of late. It's a morbid hobby, perhaps, but she's actually begun to enjoy making the hike up to check on her Shaderoot Seeds and soak in the quiet air of reverence that surrounds such a holy place.[break][break]

And Helios seems to find comfort here, which is the most important thing. Her tormented Blaziken must find some semblance of peace among the mossy headstones, for he spends hours meditating or perhaps praying among the other lost souls that have found a home here. He still regards Luka with the same angry distain, but he seems a bit softer around the edges, somehow. A bit of the Pokémon she used to know shines the shroud of anger and resentment curled around him.[break][break]

So of course Luka can't stand idly by when she hears that something's been causing trouble on the mountain. But she doesn't notice anything amiss on her hike up.[break][break]

Helios, who's far ahead of her, does. He sees the young man stumble and fall, but simply stands there and lets it happen.[break][break]

When Luka catches up a minute later she beelines to the man's side, worry creased between her brows. "Oh gosh...are you okay?" she asks, holding out a hand for him to take. "Did something happen? W-was it the ghosts? My goodness, please be ca— c-c-care...ful..."[break][break]

Her fretting turns into a soft stammer before it fades into frightened silence. Her hand is still outstretched but Luka stares past the stranger's head, into a pair of glowing red eyes that leer over them.

Bryan groans as he hits the floor and Morepeko continues to roll as it folded itself into a ball to protect it's crumbs and rolls into the Helios. He was out of hangry mode now cause he managed to find some crumbs to hold him over in his pouch so Helios was greeted by a extremely goofy and happy rat. [break][break]

Bryan however was not happy, quite the opposite in fact. He was going to lash out at Morepeko for his stupid shenanigans but instead he saw a girl in front of him offering her help and showing concern for him. He also saw her hand but he was too proud and stubborn to accept help so he let out a small sigh "I'll be fine, I've taken worse hits than that." he said slowly getting up and dusting himself off as he was blissfully unaware of the red eyes glowing behind him. [break][break]

"Ghost? Nah it was my little shit of a morepeko." he explained "He made me lose my balance when he threw a shit fit about running out of snacks and I slipped off the path up there." He said before making a small pause as luka could most likely see the metaphorical gears in his head begin to turn. [break][break]

"You wouldn't happen to have any seeds on you by chance would you?" he asked.

What is he saying? Morpeko, snacks, carrots? The young man's casual banter slips like sand between her fingertips, lost as Luka continues to gape in horror at whatever manifests behind him. She tries to nod and seem interested, unable to break the habit of intrinsic politeness, but there's nothing behind her eyes but brimming fear.[break][break]

Helios looks on in silence, arms folded over his chest. Even though he sees the same thing she does, he makes no move to help.[break][break]

"M-monsieur," Luka finally warbles, lifting her still empty hand to point over his shoulder, "B-b-behind you, t-there's..."[break][break]

The eyes continue to stare, unblinking. Seconds later a mouth takes shape as well— just as brightly crimson, with the impression of jagged teeth hanging in empty space. Despite her fear Luka lunges forwards and roughly grabs the man by the arm, yanking him out of the way as best as her noodle arms can.

Bryan saw her freaking the hell out and was extremely confused, she looked like she saw a ghost. He looked over at the helioptile and Morepeko and saw them acting normally. [break][break]

"Morepeko! Come here!" he ordered. It finished it's nuts and became hangry again but this time it saw the ghost and decided to take it's anger out on it. It fired off a parting shot towards Bryan but he managed to dodge it at the last second, blasting the ghost behind him instead. [break][break]

"Morepeko WHAT THE FUCK?" He shouted at it, Bryan looked behind him as Luka had also told him to look. he finally saw what Morepeko
and luka were talking about, a ghost. Bryan quickly moved over to Luka and stood in front of her, shielding her from the ghost. "Don't worry. I'll handle it. Just make sure you don't get in the way!" he told her as Morepeko seemed eager to battle.

"Ah, w-wait! Hang on..." Luka tries to pull herself in front of the man again, to force herself into the space between him and the ghostly apparition. But as she tries to dart forwards she finds her arm caught by Helios, yanking her back. She blinks at him, surprise overtaking terror. And for a second her heart warms to think that he cares enough to protect her.[break][break]

A moment later Helios shoves her aside and it's clear he's just moving her out of the way so he can get to the ghosts as well.[break][break]

Ahead of them the gaping mouth cackles silently and crimson eyes blink once, closing into nothingness. When they open again they're joined by a dozen more, all staring out with the same silent maliciousness. Helios clicks his beak and charges right into the fray, flaming talons swiping through the air as the ghosts shriek and scatter, surrounding their little group on all sides.

They were surrounded huh? A perfect time to use his ace pokemon, bryan released an ultra ball into the air. "Cover your eyes lady!" he warned her as the ghosts stared at the pokeball. "Morgan! Dazzling gleam!" he shouted as he covered his own eyes and a grimmsnarl emerged from it's containment unit and a blash of blinding light shone over the area and fey energy ran rampant towards the ghosts hopefully pushing them back. [break][break]

At the very least it was obvious that they should look for an opening and fucking run as soon as they got the chance so Bryan grabbed the girl's hand and began to rush. "We need to go!"

"Eh? Wait...wait!" Luka tries to resist, but she's dragged along as easily as anything. As soon as the flash of light subsides she glances back, watching as Helios screeches and throws out a flaming blaze kick at the surrounding ghosts. Licks of flame brush against Bryan's Grimmsnarl as well— the Blaziken clearly doesn't care about collateral damage.[break][break]

The ghosts add their own deafening wails to the din and flickers of spectral energy begin to form and pulse around them. Splotches of dark blue and purple bleed against the sky like a fresh bruise. But the attack doesn't seem to advance. If anything, the spirits appear to be attempting some sort of barrier between them and their attackers.[break][break]

Luka squirms and twists in Bryan's grasp until she's able to yank herself free. Her eyes, when she fixes them upon him, are desperate. "Please wait," she pants, "They've never done this before! I-I mean, we've been coming here almost every day for like, a week now. A-and the ghosts have never given us any trouble! S-so there must be something else going on! Some reason for them to be agitated like this..." Teeth sink into her bottom lip and fingers twist into the hem of her skirt.[break][break]

"I think we need to try and help them instead of attacking like this!"

The battle raged on as he stared at his surroundings, it did not seem like the fighting was making much of a difference of causing this ghost to get out of here, bryan was at a loss on what to do when he heard the woman's voice pitch her thoughts. "If that's the case then, what should we do?!" he said trying to figure a way out of this situation. Maybe she specialized in this kind of stuff? Maybe she was a ghost buster?

What to do indeed? Bryan's assumptions are wrong— she's not an exorcist or a specialist or even remotely qualified to help with this kind of thing. Fighting is clearly getting them nowhere, but leaving things as they are doesn't seem to be an option either. So what can they do?[break][break]

"I don't know," Luka answers truthfully. Humiliation floods her cheeks carmine. "I don't...I-I don't know, but..." Hands come to rest at either side of her temples, fingers digging in as she tries to think, think, think.[break][break]

"In movies and stuff...g-ghosts come out because...b-because someone summoned them, o-or they were disturbed, or..." She shakes her head as though it might dislodge the answer. "I mean, that's got to be it, right? They never bothered me before...s-so something bad must have happened. I don't know what, but..." [break][break]She grabs Bryan's hand, now the one to try and tug him further along the mountain path. "Let's see if we can find anything amiss!"

Ugh was this bitch crazy?! Bryan hated ghost shit, he found it so fucking stupid but it seemed like she knew what she was doing so he just followed her lead, going down the path. [break][break]

No, Bryan was right the first time. Luka has no idea what she's doing, and her idea is foolhardy at best. Her altruism is of a dangerous variety— so willing to offer herself as sacrifice that she unwittingly drags someone else down with her.[break][break]

"Umm...I-I don't know! B-but you have my permission to haunt me, in that case! I'm sorry!" The glance she throws him over her shoulder is brief but genuinely apologetic. Eyes soften at the corners before they fix ahead of her once again, sweeping the landscape for any hints of trouble.[break][break]

"Wait..." Luka skids to a halt in front of one of Mt. Pyre's many stone monuments. But this holy ground seems disturbed. The marble is dirty, the stone freshly cracked in places. Empty cans and cigarette butts dot the path towards the monument like weeds.[break][break]

"Maybe...d-do you think this is what they're upset about?" No sooner does she speak than the ghosts appear again, eyes glowing with mistrust and fear, some with floating teeth bared in a scowl.[break][break]

"W-wait, wait!" Luka waves her arms frantically, stepping in front of Bryan as a sort of pitiful meat shield. "This is good! I mean, n-not good, but...w-what I mean is, um! I'm sorry this happened to you? If this place is special for you...we can help you clean it up!"

Why is she so apologetic?! it made bryan feel bad already, whatever it didn't matter right now! [break][break]

She had gained a better understanding of the situation it seems and explained it in a very roundabout way. Bryan saw all the things littering the gravestone and commanded his pokemon to help out "Grimmsnarl use your hairs to clean up!" he said as grimmsnarl shot him a degusted look in protest. "MORGAN PLEASE." he begged and his Pokémon eventually gave in. [break][break]

His pickpocket ability activates as he manages to wipe clean the cans and cigarette buds "HAPPY?!" he asks the spirit in a panic as he just wants to get the hell out of here.

They make a good pair, even if the teamwork is reluctant on Bryan's part. It only takes a few minutes of dedicated cleaning to spruce up the desecrated monument. Luka aids Bryan's Grimmsnarl in picking up litter and clearing the grounds, while her Steenee carefully tends to the grass and a few trampled wildflowers. Eventually, Helios stomps back up to join them, observing the hustle and bustle with folded claws.[break][break]

And they could leave it like that, truly. But perhaps they can do one thing more. Luka releases her Carbink, and the rock bunny uses their mane to clean off the monument. The marble shifts and creaks, and when her Pokemon draws away, it gleams as if brand new, the cracks filled in with crystal like a form of kintsugi.[break][break]

Anise lays her hand on the grass around the monument, and several bright flowers bloom to life- a living bouquet. Luka smiles, first at her team, and then at Bryan.

"Thank you for your help," she says with a genuine earnest. "We couldn't have done it without you. And look! They seem happy now."[break][break]

The ghosts have crowded around the tombstone, their frightening expressions replaced by wide, toothy smiles. One seems to float towards the pair of trainers, the silhouette of a Gengar briefly visible as it nods and fades into nothingness with the rest of the group.
